Willing To Hire Youth for Summer Jobs

January 14, 2013, Colorado Springs, CO – Once a rite of passage to adulthood, summer jobs for teens is disappearing.
Fewer than three in 10 American teenagers now hold jobs such as running cash registers, mowing lawns or busing restaurant tables from June to August. The decline has been particularly sharp since 2000, with employment for 16-to-19-year olds falling to the lowest level since World War II.
And teen employment may never return to pre-recession levels, suggests a projection by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.1
Experts agree that lack of employment opportunities for teens and young adults often leads to a lack of knowledge and experience needed to build long-term careers. Those who don’t work in their teen years may not learn the soft skills needed to be successful employees in the future.
“Employers can help,” says Dr. Lance Bolton, President of the Pikes Peak Community College System. “Students need, and benefit enormously from, work opportunities. Part-time employment or internships can be life-changing for students who know little about professional work environments. Skills related to character, self-control and work ethic naturally emerge from work opportunities in business.”
To help youth find summer employment, The Pikes Peak Workforce Center Youth Zone is seeking employers who have summer positions for youth,
16 through 21, to attend the Annual Governor’s Summer Job Hunt Youth Job Fair.
WHAT: Youth Job Fair
WHY: Employers can find the best young people for their summer jobs and help train their future workforce in one place, at one time.
WHEN: Thursday, March 7, 2013 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
WHERE: The DoubleTree Hotel, 1775 East Cheyenne Mountain Boulevard, Colorado Springs, CO 80906.
WHO: Employers in El Paso and Teller Counties who need to fill their summer positions and who pay the minimum wage of $7.78 per hour.
